Glutathione

Glutathione is a tripeptide, γ-L-glutamyl-L-cysteinyl-glycine, distinguished by an unusual gamma peptide bond between the glutamate side chain and cysteine, which renders it resistant to standard peptidases. It is synthesized intracellularly in most cell types and is the principal non-protein thiol in mammalian cells. Its free cysteine thiol group serves as the reducing substrate for glutathione peroxidases and as a conjugation partner in glutathione S-transferase–mediated phase II metabolism, cycling between reduced (GSH) and oxidized (GSSG) forms.
